Healthy Lunch with Senator Patterson in Greenview Park
March 22, 2008 was an exciting day in Columbia’s Greenview Park! The weather could not have been more perfect as hundreds of members of the Greenview Community and the surrounding communities came together to share a healthy lunch of Low Country Boil (that’s Beaufort or Frogmore Stew to some of us) and to honor
Senator Kay Patterson, who has served the area faithfully in the State House for many years. The event was sponsored by Palmetto Center for Advocacy, Inc. (PCA).
Attendees also took advantage of the many free health screening opportunities made available. These screenings included height, weight and Body Mass Index, performed by PCA staff, as well as blood pressure checks, carotid artery scans and HIV testing. The HIV/AIDS Council, Palmetto Health, Small Smiles, Advanced Diagnostics, Family Connection, National Direct and Women’s Ministries/Women of Power all participated in the event.
Cardinal Newman High School provided superb volunteers who helped the event run smoothly and did a great job taking pictures!
Reverend Margie Gallman, Chair of the PCA Board of Directors, opened the festivities with remarks about PCA’s obesity prevention efforts. Representative David Mack also addressed the crowd and discussed the importance of health care in the African American community; Representative Mack introduced the guest of Honor, Senator Kay Patterson. Senator Patterson, warm and gracious as always, entertained the crowd with his humorous oratory. After the closing remarks, everyone enjoyed the delicious meal prepared by Houston’s Catering and plenty of fellowship. The children all had a great time on the inflatable playthings provided by PCA.
Many thanks to all who came out and helped to make this event so wonderful! Photos...
